Trip to depleted Newcastle could give Mark Hughes his first QPR win

La Liga Betting: Tricky start for the new coaches

Three new coaches have been appointed since the last round of games and all are expected to taste defeat in their first La Liga match in charge...

There was a distinct lack of festive cheer in La Liga, with three clubs using the winter break as an opportunity to get shot of their struggling bosses and bring in some fresh blood.

Atletico Madrid made the most high-profile move, with nomadic Diego Simeone stepping into the dugout at a club who show similar distain for the concepts of continuity and stability.

They haven't kept a coach for longer than three years since 1986, so have shrewdly hired a tactician who has held seven posts in six years, eliminating the need for either party to worry about the other demanding loyalty.

Despite not sticking around for long at any of his former sides, Simeone enjoyed a fair amount of success, earning Argentine titles with Estudiantes and River Plate. His only previous European spell though was a few reasonable but unremarkable months in Serie A with Catania.

Making way for the ex-Atletico midfielder is Gregorio Manzano, who successfully negotiated a route into the knockout rounds of the Europa League - which they are 16.0 to win - yet failed to impress domestically, the main issue being just one point taken from seven away games.

Those who saw Simeone's Catania team on their travels will query whether he is the ideal man to fix that, and he faces a tough baptism on Saturday at Champions League hopefuls Malaga, who nearly beat Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in the Copa del Rey on Tuesday.

It is not only the bragging rights of a victory in the Old Firm derby that will spur Celtic to beat Rangers, but also the knowledge that a win will see them leapfrog their great rivals to go top of the Scottish Premier League.

Celtic have won their last eight games in the SPL to move to within one point of Rangers in the league standings, having been as far as 15 points off the pace back in November.

The return of Emilio Izaguirre will provide an additional boost to Celtic as the Honduran defender has been sidelined since suffering a broken ankle in August.

Betting Preview: Tottenham - Chelsea (22.12)

Based solely on their records in London derbies this season, it is hard to predict anything other than a home win as Tottenham host Chelsea, but the fine defensive record of Andre Villas’ Boas men on their travels should ensure they leave with at least a point.

Chelsea have lost both games with fellow London foes so far this season, while Tottenham enjoy a perfect 100 per cent record from their three fixtures with capital rivals.

Meanwhile, Tottenham can count Chelsea among their more favoured rivals when assessing recent results, as they are unbeaten in their last five games against them.

With Chelsea’s recent form also below expectations, a Tottenham victory at 2.50 with Ladbrokes will look good value with punters.

However, they could have difficulty without influential wingers Aaron Lennon and a struggling Gareth Bale and this could work in Chelsea’s favour.

Betting Preview: Manchester City - Arsenal (18.12)

Following their maiden domestic defeat of the season at Stamford Bridge earlier in the week, it will be interesting to see how Manchester City will react to this first setback.

They face an Arsenal side unbeaten in their last ten league matches, and featuring arguably the hottest striker in world football at the minute in Robin Van Persie.

City have a 100% record at the Etihad Stadium this season, and are 1.66 with Ladbrokes to extend this run against the Londoners.

Their discipline has been questionable of late though, and Gael Clichy will miss the clash against his former employers after becoming the third player in sky blue to be dismissed in their past six matches.

Pablo Zabaleta will likely move to left back to deputise for Frenchman Clichy, with Micah Richards set to return at right back after missing the Chelsea game with a calf injury.

Roberto Mancini otherwise has no fresh injury or suspension worries, but could rotate his massive and immensely talented squad by giving chances to Edin Dzeko and former Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri, who have been used more sparingly in recent weeks.

For the visitors, it will be a case of hoping their recent exuberance which has been epitomised by imperious forward Robin Van Persie will continue at Eastlands.

Arsene Wenger’s only fresh injury concern is Andre Santos, who sustained an ankle injury last week that will keep him out for three months.

He didn’t take part in Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Everton though, and Thomas Vermaelen looks set to continue in a less familiar left back role in his place.

The improving form of Theo Walcott could also prove a factor, as his combination with his captain Van Persie in recent weeks has proved extremely fruitful.

Arsenal are a big 5.00 to follow up a 3-0 success at Eastlands last year with another win here, but with City’s home advantage an adequate counter to Arsenal’s superior recent form, the draw could be the best bet at 3.75.

This is the time of year when Manchester United usually come into their own, according to boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Reds can go top this weekend if they beat Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road on Sunday, and rivals Manchester City lose on home soil to in-form Arsenal.

City's first defeat of the season to Chelsea at the start of the week was the first sign of a possible chink in their armour, leaving United sitting just two points behind in second spot.

The Old Trafford club have made a habit down the years of being able to position themselves perfectly for a Premier League title assault at the turn of the New Year.

Tottenham are relying on results elsewhere to ensure progression in the Europa League, but they must also take care of business themselves in Dublin.

Harry Redknapp has used the competition to blood his youngsters, following Spurs’ run to the Champions League quarter-final last season, and now needs to win and hope that PAOK can beat Rubin Kazan in Greece.

Shamrock Rovers have failed to collect a single point in Group A, and lost 3-1 in the return fixture at White Hart Lane.

Celtic head into their final Europa League Group I game against Udinese knowing only a win will be enough to secure their progression.

Their Italian opponents however, need just a point to make it through to the next stage of the European competition.

It promises to be a tough evening for the Bhoys and they could be making an early exit from Europe once again…
