Carling Cup: Manchester City - Manchester United (19 Jan)

·

The target for City, in the absence of European football, will be gaining domestic silverware - the FA Cup and the Carling Cup will be at the top of their priorities, perhaps just behind Champions League qualification. And they will probably want to shake things up a bit given Saturday's disappointing display at Everton. This was Mancini's first loss in England after four wins in his first four games.

United returned to winning ways after scoring three second-half goals against Burnley on Saturday but their performance was once again far from impressive. With seven defeats already this season in Premier League and the wounds of the FA Cup exit to Leeds still raw, the League Cup has taken on greater significance for Man United and Ferguson is likely to field a stronger line-up against City than might have been expected.

The home side have not lost at home in 17 matches now, while United have some problems on the road this season.

Man City were beaten 4-3 at Old Trafford in the Premier League earlier this season with Michael Owen scoring the winner in stoppage time.

Prediction

The last three fixtures between these two at Eastlands have all resulted in 1-0 scorelines (once in City's and twice in United's favour) so Under 2,5 goals look like a good bet - 1.85 at bet365. This is just the first leg of the Carling Cup semi-final tie and the match is likely to be a tight affair.

I expect Manchester United to win here because it convinced me by their first goal to break the net despite Burnley all in to defense in the match. Rooney is on his best form while the Devil shows great morale.

Mancini's side was stopped by Everton. Bit or less, the unexpected defeat should shakes the players' confidence.

The Devil with stronger mind-set is better choice.
